- Sepia-toned head-and-shoulders portrait photograph of a Detroit fireman. The badge on the cap reads, "DFD 203" and the badge on the jacket reads, "Detroit 203." The bottom of the image notes the photography studio of, "Friend & Smith, 244 - 246 Woodward Ave, Detroit." Noted on verso, "Wm. Sullivan," this is possibly an image of William Sullivan. Sullivan was a Lieutenant for Hook and Ladder Co. No. 2.

- Black and white photographic print of an older photographic print with the caption "First Hose Reel in Detroit" added at its bottom. A horse drawn hose apparatus carrying five firefighters is stopped in the street in front of a firehouse decorated with stone reliefs of crossed ladders and bugles. The number 1 is visible on the lanterns of the apparatus. A crowd of men in hats and coats stands along the wooden sidewalk. "KZ66" printed in white in lower right corner of grey inner border. "Hose reel 1860 w. Lafayette Steam Engine #1" handwritten on verso.

Battle is posing in a "chief" sash, and next to a "chief engineer" helmet, and horn. Battle was noted for being first paid chief of the department after its formation in 1865. - Sepia-toned composite group portrait of the members of the Detroit Fire Department in 1890, composed of 207 separate head-and-shoulder portraits of unidentified firefighters arranged in rows on the right, and, on the left, portraits of Chief James Battle, Assistant Chiefs James R. Elliott and Mark H. Gascoigne, First Battalion Chief John Kendall, Second Battalion Chief James C. Broderick, Third Battalion Chief William J. Gowan, Superintendent of Horses Allan. Armstrong, and Master Mechanic Francis Beaufait, as well as a photo of Detroit Fire Department Headquarters on the northeast corner of Wayne Street and Larned Street. Images of several pieces of firefighting equipment for a design surrounding the portrait of Battle, and the left edge of the image. A.G. - Sepia-toned albumen photo showing the crew of Hook and Ladder Company #1. The crew is standing or seated beside their horse-drawn ladder truck which is located in front of the fire station building. Firemen have been identified as follows: Capt. Wm. Cooper, Lieut. Thos. Ramsey (seated in chairs), Thos. Lapine (driver), and Jim Shay (at tiller on rear end of truck). Firemen who are standing (left to right) include: Bob Nash, Wm. Sullivan, Timothy Shay, Alex. Gray, Malcolm Sutherland, and James E. Henry. A handwritten note at the bottom of the photo shows "Detroit Fire Department, Truck No.1." Handwriting on the verso notes "New Truck of 'Rescue' Hook and Ladder Co. No. 1, located in front of the first headquarters building located at the corner of Wayne and W. Larned Streets (behind the old Washington Mutual Building). Built in 1870 by the Hartshorn Co. of N.Y. City at a cost of $2,500 (note lack of running boards). The unit served until 1876 when it was replaced by a newer model."

- Large sepia-toned photograph taken of the ceremonial final run of a horse-drawn Detroit Fire Department fire apparatus on April 10, 1922. Three uniformed firefighters riding on a fire engine being drawn by a team of three horses south along Woodward Avenue, as taken from the west side of Woodward south of Grand River Avenue. The Shaw Building and Rayl's Hardware stand in the background. Spectators line the sidewalk, and peer through the windows overlooking the street. The photo is mounted on linen.

- Sepia-toned photograph of Detroit Engine Company No. 9 exiting a fire station with a horse-drawn Amoskeag steam engine. A team of three horses pull the equipment, driven by a fireman, a second fireman is seated beside him, while a third fireman is standing on the rear of the engine behind the water tank. Engine Company #9 was located at the northwest corner of East Larned and Riopelle Streets. (The building was razed in 1961 for urban renewal.)

- Sepia-toned photo of a fire department chief engineer who is standing beside a seated fireman. The chief is wearing his uniform which includes a long, double-breasted coat, decorative belt with the word, "Chief," and a fireman's hat. He is also holding a speaking trumpet. The seated fireman is probably from Woodbridge Co. No. 12 since the number, "12," is visible on his belt buckle. Handwriting on the top and bottom of the photo notes, "William Lee, Chief Engineer, 1859." The verso has an oval-shaped photo of an unknown, well-dressed man.

- Sepia-toned glossy photo showing a fire at the First Congregational Church. The view shows the charred remains of the steeple and roofline although the exterior walls do not appear to be damaged. Two fire department ladders are visible on the left side of the building, one is at the front, and another is at the far right side. One of the fire department ladder company wagons (number not visible) and a steam pumper can be seen in the lower right area of the photo. Many spectators can be seen on the streets adjacent to the church. Handwriting on the verso shows "First Congregational Church, built 1863, Fort & Wayne Streets, later used by Detroit Journal."
