- Hardcover book containing the handwritten minutes from the meetings of Mechanics Company No. 8, as well as its constitution and by-laws, brief accounts of several fires, and some financial records spanning its founding on December 6, 1848 to its dissolution on April 14, 1856, in protest of an ordinance that forbid the company from pulling their hand-drawn fire apparatus along sidewalks. The passages are attributed to the group's secretaries--in order--C.F. Morris, H. Willson, Alexander Lambie, D.C. Whitman, E.P. Warden, John McNamara, Thomas McWilliams, James Cavanagh, and Isaac C. Wallace. The pages following the dissolution of the company include math problems and multiplication tables, the lyrics to the ballad "She Was Bred in Old Kentucky," a drawing resembling a plumbing diagram, the outline of several pressed leaves, and several geometric sketches. The book is bound in a brown cover and "Record," and "Mechanics Fire Co. No. 8," are printed on the its spine. A handwritten inscription on a front flyleaf reads, "April 12, 1856, This book is presented to Isaac C. Wallace by Mechanic Fire Company No. 8."

- Sepia-toned photograph of a memorial display for Captain Richard Filban of the Detroit Fire Department's Hook and Ladder Company No. 3, who died in the line of duty at the D.M. Ferry and Company Seed Warehouse fire on January 1, 1886. A framed head-and-shoulders portrait photo of Filban in uniform is surrounded by a floral display. Wreaths, crosses, doves, ladders, axes, and hooks are among the motifs represented in the display. Several messages are also spelled out in flowers, "faithful unto death," "A.O.H.," "G.R.F.D.," "Capt. R.F.," "Last Call Box 16," and "Last Call Dick." "Mr. Worth 3 #350 + 1 #365 + ur[?], Eng #2 Larned + Antoine, $2.00 paid," and "#48 Richard Pilban Funeral Wreaths DFD," are handwritten in pencil on the verso.

- Sepia-toned photo of the Belle Isle bridge burning on April 27, 1915, as taken from an elevated position along the Detroit riverfront to the west of the foot of the bridge. Most of the bridges trusses have burned, leaving bare columns however two trusses near the center of the river still stand, and one on the north side has partially collapsed into the river. The Detroit Fire Department fire tug JAMES BATTLE sprays water on the remaining trusses on the north end. A large cloud of smoke rises from the center trusses. In the foreground at the lower left, several spectators watch from the riverfront beyond a wooden fence.

- Mounted black and white photograph taken of the ruins of Capitol High School following its fire on January 27, 1893, as viewed from an elevated positioned across Griswold Street to the southwest. Icicles hang from the building's facade and surrounding utility lines, and rubble has settled around its base. A ladder apparatus, and a fire engine are on Griswold, near the northeastern end of the building. Several figures dot the streets. The sign for the Griswold Street Theatre is visible on the right edge of the frame. A moonlight tower is visible down State Street on the left edge of the frame. - Mounted black and white panoramic image of the fire tug JAMES BATTLE being used to fight the fire which claimed the Belle Isle Bridge on April 27, 1915, created from two overlapping photos. Firefighters stand at the bow of the BATTLE, on the right side of the frame with its port side to the camera and the Detroit shore of the Detroit River, while smoke rises from the remaining trusses of the bridge on the right. Several bare columns, and another smoldering truss are visible further across the river in the background. The caption, "Burning of the Belle Isle Bridge, April 27, 1915," is printed along the bottom of the mat board.

A fire engine, and the cloud of smoke coming from it are visible down State Street on the left. - Mounted sepia-toned photograph taken of a fire engine and a hose apparatus in the intersection of Grand River Avenue, Griswold Street, and Rowland Street (now Shelby Street), behind the ruins of Capitol High School following its fire on January 27, 1893, facing the south. A crowd of spectators have gathered around the steam engine from which a cloud of smoke rises. Firefighers are using hoses to spray both the eastern face of the building along Griswold, and the western one along Shelby in the background. Snow covers the ground, and ice coats the eastern face of the school.
