- Description:
- The Detroit Sugar Company was located on the north corner of Ludlow Avenue and Woodward Avenue near the Paint Creek. This photograph shows a centrifugal and sugar mixer. The sugar beet processing mill was built in 1899 and Woodward Avenue (then named Sugar Avenue) was created to facilitate access to the factory. Unfortunately the facility was a failure and closed in 1906, whereupon the brand new building was demolished and Sugar Avenue was renamed Woodward Avenue after the prominent family whose property was adjacent to the road.
