- Michigan State University Women's Resource Center Program Coordinator Lydia Weiss hosts a panel discussion entitled "Protest, Power & Perseverance: Women in the Civil Rights Movement." Dr. Freya Anderson Rivers, MSU PhD candidate Jewell Debnam, Dr. Eva L. Evans, and Mrs. Carmen Benavides discuss their personal experiences in and research on the American Civil Rights Movement of the ninteen-sixties. Rivers recalls being the first black woman to enroll at Louisiana State University in 1964 and Debnam explains her research on the involvement of women throughout the movement. Evans reflects on her experiences as the Chair of the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and Benavides talks about her career as a Lansing school district principal. The panelists also discuss their views on the progress of the civil rights movement in America and the work that still needs to be done to insure universal human rights. They answer questions from the audience. Sponsored by MSU Women's Resource Center, the MSU Center for Gender in Global Context and the American Association of University Women (AAUW). Held at the International Center on the campus of Michigan State University.

Obama reflects on the life of Gabriella Miller, after whom the bill is named. and commemorates death at the age of ten from brain cancer. He comments on her family's struggle. The legislation funds additional research into pediatric cancer, autism, and other diseases.

- John Revitte, Michigan State University Professor of Human Resources and Labor Relations, presents some of the research he and Ken Germanson have conducted looking at the Allied Industrial Workers union and their relationships with the UAW-AFL, the UAW-CIO, and additional research he hopes to conduct into the stories of the parts supplier industries and the AIW. Germanson introduces Revitte and several others join the conversation. Revitte asks for their assistance to find memorabilia of the unions and coaches them on where to look. They reminisce about some high and low points in the unions and some of the past and present struggles faced by workers.

- President Obama announces a new research initiative designed to revolutionize understanding of the human brain. Called the "BRAIN Initiative" (Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies), Obama reminds listeners of the spectrum of brain and neurological disorders and suggests the research will provide treatments, cures and spin-off technologies. He says the initial cost of $100 million in the fiscal year 2014 budget, will be recouped by investing in American innovation to create jobs and strengthen our economy. Held in the East Room of the White House.

- President Obama talks about clean energy research and investment. Susan Hockfield, President of MIT, discusses the advantages of federal research grants. Paul Holland, CEO of Serious Materials, discusses the expansion of his green building materials corporation. President Obama outlines an energy program that draws on the administration's stimulus package for $39 billion at the Department of Energy and $20 billion in tax incentives for clean energy. He also talks about proposed budget spending to make permanent existing tax cuts for energy research and experimentation.
