A building with a steeple stands in the distance at the upper left. The photo has been retouched in grey and peach-colored paint to outline the horses and the engine, and a horizontal black line has been drawn beneath the engine.

In the background is the Golde Clothes store and also a crowd of people who are standing on the sidewalk. - Firemen's Fund Association membership certificate, printed by the Detroit Lithographic Office, and issued to James R. Elliott on March 16, 1866. The document bears the signatures of President John Hyland, Treasurer James A. Elliott, and Secretary John Kendall, beside a green adhesive embossed Firemen's Fund Association seal. Illustrations of a firefighter speaking into a bugle, as two other firefighters hold a hose, as well as of a team of firefighters riding in an early self-propelled steam-driven fire engine are on the left side of the certificate. The certificate is mounted on linen.

This photograph is one of a series of eight photos of former Detroit Fire Department Commissioners. The decorative engraved logo of the photographer (Randall) has been torn off of the verso.

- Sepia-toned photo of a fire department chief engineer who is standing beside a seated fireman. The chief is wearing his uniform which includes a long, double-breasted coat, decorative belt with the word, "Chief," and a fireman's hat. He is also holding a speaking trumpet. The seated fireman is probably from Woodbridge Co. No. 12 since the number, "12," is visible on his belt buckle. Handwriting on the top and bottom of the photo notes, "William Lee, Chief Engineer, 1859." The verso has an oval-shaped photo of an unknown, well-dressed man.

The group is Steam Engine Company No. 9 and the number, "9," can be seen on the side of the hose wagon just below the driver's seat. The brick fire station and open doors are visible in the background. A carved stone above the doors shows "A.D. 1901." Several other brick buildings can be seen in the background on the left side of the photo.
