- Proclamation signed by President Thomas Jefferson and Secretary of State James Madison declaring George Hoffman the Inspector of the Revenue for the Port of Michilimackinac in 1806. The document is embossed and stamped with the Great Seal of the United States on the lower left. The text of the proclamation is as follows: Thomas Jefferson, President of the United States of America, to all who shall see these presents, greeting: Know ye, That reposing special Trust and Confidence in the Integrity, Diligence and Discretion of George Hoffman of Detroit I have nominated, and by and with the Advice and Consent of the Senate, Do Appoint him Inspector of the Revenue for the Port of Michilimakanac and do authorize and empower him to execute and fulfil the Duties of that Office according to law; And to have and to hold the said Office, with all the Rights and Emoluments thereunto legally appertaining, unto him the said George Hoffman during the Pleasure of the President of the United States for the time being. In Testimony whereof, I have caused these Letters to be made Patent, and the Seal of the United states to be hereunto affixed. Given under my Hand, at the City of Washington, the First Day of February in the Year of our Lord one Thousand eight Hundred and Six, and of the Independence of the United States of America, the Thirtieth. - Certificate, mounted on linen, conferring upon Russell A. Alger the rank of Brigadier General, issued on April 9th, 1866. The certificate is signed by President of the United States Andrew Johnson and by United States Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton, and is stamped with the seal of the United States Office of War on the upper left. The full text of the certificate is as follows: "The President of the United States of America To all who shall see these presents greeting: Know ye, That I do hereby confer on Russell A. Alger of the U.S. Volunteers, in the service of the United States by and with the advice and consent of the Senate the rank of Brigadier General by brevet, in said service, to rank as such from the Eleventh day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Sixty-five, for gallant and meritorious service during the war. And I do strictly charge and require all Officers and Soldiers under his command to obey and respect him accordingly and he is to observe and follow such orders and directions, from time to time, as he shall receive from me, or the future President of the United States of America, and other Officers set over him, according to law, and the rules and discipline of war. This commission to continue in force during the pleasure of the President of the United States for the time being. Given under my hand at the City of Washington, this ninth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and Sixty-six and in the Ninetieth year of the Independence of the United States. By the President. Andrew Johnson Edwin M. Stanton Secretary of War" The certificate also contains hand written text, in red ink, located on the top right corner. The text is as follows: "Recorded volume 4 page 82 Adjutant General's office April 9, 1866 E.D. Townsend Asst. Adjt. Genl."

The card is postmarked February 20, 1909, from Clarkson, New York, and a handwritten message addressed to C.G. Hampton of 24 Blaine Avenue, Detroit is on the verso: Friday P.M. All well as usual. Julie[?] + 2 went to the City yesterday. Ed is all too crazy[?] yet, but will purchase in the spring. Has received annual[?] catalogue. Minnie + family well. Geo. is [?] preparing[?] warm ash today + [?] although its good [?]. Love to all. Sincerely W.M.A.[?]

A large crowd is gathered on either side of the parade. Several of the buildings in the background are decorated with banners. "Pres. Theo. The note reads, "The President and Mrs. McKinley request the pleasures of the company of Secretary and Mrs. Alger, and the ladies of their household, at half past eight o'clock this evening. Concert by the Mexican Band. Monday, May 10th, 1897."

A gold embossed eagle seal is at the top of the card.
