- Dr. Carol Quirke, Professor of History at SUNY-Old Westbury, delivers a talk entitled, "Bitter Kisses for Labor: Mass Consumer Capitalism and the Hershey Chocolate Sit-down Strike, 1937." Quirke talks about her book "Eyes on Labor" then discusses in depth the chapter on the 1937 Hershey's sit-down strike. She explains the evolution of visual images in national newspapers and then tracks the use of photography to present unions and strikes as violent and un-American. Quirke describes how Hershey management fought off the attempt at unionization. She answers questions from the audience. Quirke is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, the MSU Museum, and the MSU School of Journalism, as part of the University's Project 60/50. - Description:
- Group of primarily women and children stand in front of a restaurant in Hamtramck, Michigan, with banners and picket signs, some reading, "Join the fight for a 20% reduction in meat prices" and "Strike, 20% reduction in meat prices." "On July 27, 1935, Polish and Black housewives began to picket Hamtramck butcher shops, carrying signs demanding a 20 percent price cut throughout the city and an end to price gouging in Black neighborhoods, when men, taunted by onlookers who accused them of being "scared by a few women," attempted to cross the lines, they were "seized by the pickets...their faces slapped, their hair pulled and their packages confiscated...a few were knocked down and trampled," that night Hamtramck butchers reported unhappily that the boycott had been 95 percent effective," from U.S. Women in Struggle: A Feminist Studies Anthology, by Claire Goldberg Moses and Heidi I. Hartmann.

- Description:
- Large group of Detroit Public School teachers, some carrying picket signs, walk in front of the Maccabees Building on Putnam in Detroit, Michigan. "Defying a “back-to-work” order by the Wayne County Circuit Court, enormous fines, and pressure from the media, Detroit School Board, and parents, nearly 5,000 DFT teachers and their supporters staged a massive picket outside the School Center Building during one of the longest and most bitter strikes in the school system’s history. Increased pay, accountability, and class sizes were the issues that dragged the strike out to 43 days, causing the Detroit Public Schools to close for over a month," from The Faces of Detroit, Walter Reuther Library website.
