Carl F. Schrandt

Carl F. Schrandt was born in 1906 and died in 1993. He and his wife Joan Rodman Schrandt came to Saline in 1968, purchased land on Saline-Waterworks Road, and built a house overlooking the Saline River. Carl was an executive from the Uniloy Division of Hoover Ball and Bearing Corporation, which later became Johnson Controls. He helped build Hoover into a Fortune 500 company, and retired in 1972 after 24 years with the company. Carl and Joan were very passionate about nature and public philanthropy. Carl's philanthropic interests were with the Saline Community Hospital. He joined the Operating Committee in 1958, serving eight years as chairman. After Joan's death in 1987, Carl established the "Joan Rodman Schrandt Scholarship Endowment Fund" at the hospital. In 1990, he was appointed the Honorary Chairman of the hospital's Capital Campaign for an $8 million expansion. Carl donated a substantial sum to the campaign. In 1991 when the concept of the district library became a reality, Carl donated a gift of Johnson Control stock to assist the library in purchasing an eleven-acre plot of wooded land adjacent to the Saline High School for the new facility. Upon Carl's death in 1993, one-half of his estate was bequeathed to the library. In 1994 the library board established the Carl F. Schrandt Endowment Fund to create a lasting legacy of Carl and Joan's gift to the community.
