"John Butsicaris and his brother Jim opened the Lindell Athletic Club in 1949 in the old Lindell Hotel on Cass Avenue and Bagley Street, christening their establishment the first sports bar in America. The place moved down the street to Cass and Michigan Avenues in 1963. By the 1950's, the Lindell Athletic Club had become the destination for athletes like Mickey Mantle and Wilt Chamberlin and entertainers like Milton Berle and Dean Martin, along with numerous actresses, politicians, judges, gamblers, and mobsters ...
