Portrait of John Ball, circa 1875. John Ball (1794-1884) was an early pioneer and land speculator who came to Grand Rapids in 1836. He was also a teacher, lawyer, and a politician. He also left forty acres of land on the west side to the City of Grand Rapids which became John Ball Park and home of John Ball Zoo.
