Wayne State University; Buildings; Prentis

Description:
Circa 1960s. Minoru Yamasaki and Associates. 1964. Image is of the architectual model of the Prentis and DeRoy. Partnered with the DeRoy Auditorium, Yamasaki’s form-making derived much of its strength from the careful compositional massing of pure forms and pattern repetition of surface elements. Here, the composition of streetwall-gateway building and freestanding pavilion is perhaps a modern take on a medieval castle keep. The two buildings are linked by an underground passage. Powerful moves and timeless references create an overall effect nearly as compelling as Yamasaki’s McGregor Center nearby. The original name for the Prentis Building was University Hall. In 1965 the Board of Governors decided to change the name to Meyer and Anna Prentis Building because of Prentis’ effort in creating the School of Administration. Dated May 1962.
