- Description:
- Sentimental brooch which incorporates a lock of hair of a loved one.The inclusion of black enamel around the hair indicates that the loved one was likely deceased."MBL" may be the initials of the deceased.Half mourning called for jewelry that was not flashy or showed too much shiny gold metal, so many pieces used in half mourning include dark stones or enamel. This was likely made simultaneously with the plaited hair jewelry popular in the 1850s and 1860s.

- Coral was a popular material in jewelry making for many years. This particular piece incorporates coral with fairly inexpensive gold plated silver.Bigger brooches and long earrings were popular in the second half of the 19th century, until they fell out of favor because they could easily rip the lace collars and bodices that became popular in the 1880's.

- Description:
- This ring might be considered an interesting transitional mourning ring.Earlier mourning rings were generally set with sepia scenes under glass and set into the gold band.Later mourning and memorial rings, from the 1830s on, often included locks of hair and onyx, pearls or enamel; some were plaited entirely of human hair. This ring is plain and simple, not unlike other decorative accessories of this classical revival period, and does not include the earlier sepia scenes but is more akin to rings of later in the century.

- Description:
- Coral and bells were rattles, whistles and teethers for fairly well to do babies in the eighteenth and early nineteenth century. It is also plausible that some were used in the country in the seventeenth century as they are depicted in European paintings from that era.Silversmiths produced these for purchase in gold and more commonly in silver. The coral could be replaced if it was broken or got too gummy. The coral is an essential part of this piece. It is smooth and cool for teething . Coral was believed to be a good luck charm for newborns. Many babies were, and in Italy still are, given reddish orange coral necklaces or trinkets upon their birth as the color is said to reflect the cheeks of a healthy baby.

- These are odd earrings- they are very poorly carved and are very low quality cameos. The setting into which they've been placed seems makeshift and perhaps even a repair or replacement. It seems plausible that these are early twentieth century souvenir pieces from Italy.

- Lovely, detailed tesserae work, probably the finest in our collection.Granulation work here is associated with Etruscan filigree and is a revival of the fine filigree work found at ancient archaeological sites. These mosaic bracelets, brooches, cuff links, etc. were very popular souvenir jewels. This was surely purchased as a souvenir piece on the Grand Tour, which were extended European tours especially through France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland; commonly taken at this time by youth of the aristocracy as part of their education.
