Small handwritten text near the lower left corner shows "Engr. Department 16 July 1849, Received with Lieut. Meigs letter of 10th instant." Small handwritten text in the lower right corner shows "Fort Wayne 10th Mar. of 1849, Copies/letter submitted to the Chief Engineer. M. C. Meigs, Lt. Engs."

The drawing consists of black ink on vellum paper and shows several plan and profile views of the proposed floor construction as well as a support column in the fort barracks building. Handwritten notes beneath the title show "Drawn under direction of Gen. Totten by M. C. Meigs, Lt. of Eng., 21st March 1850" and "Eng. Department, March 25, 1850. Sent with letter of this date to Lt. Newton at Detroit. J.G.T. [Joseph G. Totten]"
