Selke talks about the Packaging school at Michigan State University, the utility of packages, minimizing packaging materials, and recycling. She explains the communication function labeling performs, how packaging has changed, and how other countries monetize the costs of waste in the cost of the packaging. Sleke also describes the value of recycling as a cost reduction method when there is a use for the material. - President Obama announces an executive order to expedite a pipeline project that will help move oil more quickly and efficiently from Cushing, Oklahoma to refineries on the Gulf of Mexico. Obama discusses the Keystone Pipeline Project and concerns associated with the project, the United State's dependance on domestic and foreign oil, and the need for renewable energy as part of his "All-of-the-Above" energy strategy, meaning the U.S. needs to take advantage of all possible energy sources.

- Nathan Poirier, a graduate student in sociology, delivers a lecture entitled "In vitro meat as environmental techno-fix." Poirier frames his review of the literature surrounding in vitro meat by examining a variety of definitions of sustainability and proposing new terminologies to guide our thinking about the topic of sustainability and animal agriculture. After giving a brief overview of the environmental effects of animal agriculture, Poirier walks through the process of creating and growing in vitro meat. He concludes his talk by examining the relative sustainability of in vitro meat in comparison with animal agriculture, analyzing a variety of factors. Poirier answers questions from the audience following his lecture. Part of the Library environmental series.

Phillips discusses energy policy, technology, climate science, and what people can do in their homes and at work to conserve energy. - Frank Telewski, professor of Plant Biology and curator of the W.J. Beal Botanical Garden and Campus Arboretum at Michigan State University, delivers a talk entitled, "Keeping MSU green! Replenishing the campus arboretum." Telewski describes the campus as an arboretum containing over 48,000 trees and shrubs and discusses the many historic trees on campus and the more recently planted trees and how all are used in research, teaching, and outreach. Telewski says that trees don't live forever and talks about the program to grow and plant new trees and shrubs on campus. He answers questions from the audience. The event is convened by MSU Librarian Susan Kendall.
