- Michigan State University doctoral candidate Jewell Debnam delivers a talk titled, "The Charleston Hospital Workers' Strike of 1969: A Women's Movement." Debnam describes the working conditions of African-American nurses in South Carolina, including low pay and rampant discrimination, which lead to their 113 day strike. Debnam explains how the nurses organized, maintained solidarity, had the help of Coretta Scott King, and prevailed. She recounts the growth and decline of Local 1199 and its failure to sustain its membership once the strike succeeded. A question and answer session follows. Debnam is introduced by MSU Professor John P. Beck. With bipartisan favor, Obama hopes to sign the bill within a month. This plan will save or create 3 to 4 million jobs and doubles the capacity to generate alternative sources of energy. The plan will work to modernize health programs and schools. All these changes will be made public through Recovery.gov.
