Page 9: Capitol Building Of the State of Michigan Lansing, Michigan The State's original Capitol was located at Detroit. Then in 1847 it was decided to move it to the Township of Lansing in Ingham County. A temporary Capitol, a block southeast of the present site, was used until the permanent building was constructed. In the year of 1873 the cornerstone was laid and construction began. It took some 6 years and a cost of $1,510,130 to complete. Dedication was held and the doors were opened for business in 1879.
The Capitol Building houses the State Senate Chambers, the House of Representatives, Governor's Office, State Supreme Court and various official State offices.
Here the 148 members of the Michigan Legislature, 110 Members of the House of Representatives and 38 Members of the Senate, represent the voters of their separate districts with the power to enact laws by which all actions of the government and the people are regulated and protected.
As the population and prosperity of the State increases so the need for government facilities has increased. A number of additional buildings just west of the Capitol accommodate many of the State offices and departments.
