- Newspaper; The Detroit Times Birthday Supplement and Grand Army Souvenir, published in 1891 and sold at a cost of 50 cents. The illustrated cover shows an American flag, several Civil War generals, the seal of the state of Michigan, and several men gathered around a camp fire. A quote printed on the cover at the bottom left reads "The only national debt we can never pay, is the debt of gratitude we owe our gallant volunteers, whose heroism, devotion, and self-sacrifice made freedom and self-government a reality, and preserved to use and our children an undivided country." In this photo, taken facing south on Woodward Avenue toward Congress Street, an arch decorated with a "Welcome" banner and American flags has been erected. Pedestrians, horse carriages, and horse-drawn streetcars are visible in the streets. On both sides of Woodward, signs for Mabley and Company are posted. The obelisk-topped arch at Jefferson and Woodward is visible in the background.

- Sepia-toned photo mounted on a black cabinet card with gold trim bearing an image taken during the 1891 National Encampment of the Grand Army of the Republic in Detroit. A triumphal arch topped with an obelisk is in the process of being erected on the corner of Woodward Avenue and Jefferson Avenue, as viewed facing south. The framework beneath its lower right corner is visible. The structure is decorated with Civil War scenes, including the battle between the ironclads, the Monitor and Merrimack, as well as cavalry scene. Eagles and stars are posted on each corner of the structure, and it is draped with garlands. A horse-drawn streetcar passes beneath it, and many horse buggies and wagons are stopped near it. On the right are a moonlight tower, and the building housing Hanshaw and Cohen, Signs and Clarke and Readon, Printers.

City Hall and the base of the moonlight tower in front of it are visible on the right. At the left is the Hammond Building, draped in banners and indicated with a blue "X," and the Bagley Memorial Fountain. "Left side Detroit City Hall - (Mother's bank marked X.)" handwritten on verso.

A pair of streetcar tracks extend from the camera toward the horizon, and a horse-drawn streetcar passes under the arch, approaching the camera. The buildings along Woodward, including the store of C.W. Maynard, Druggist, are draped with flags and striped banners. "Woodward Ave. Detroit. Arch erected for G.A.R. meet there. City crowded. I'm Lisbon, Ohio, returned to Detroit right after this reunion of Grand Army of the Republic (Civil War veterans)" handwritten on verso.

Photo was taken at street level through a crowd gathered in Campus Martius facing northeast. The Michigan Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, the Second Williams Block of the Monroe Block, and the Central Market Building are visible through the sea of hats, umbrellas, and flags. Banners have been draped from the Central Market Building. "In front City Hall, (in square) Detroit Mich, during G.A.R. meeting there (about 1889.) City crowded. Citizens took in hundreds of visitors. Soldiers Monument in background. Old Russel House, famous hotel, to right of Soldiers Monument. Papa (Geo. Atwater) & his mother & Anne Marthington & others stopped there when on for our wedding in Nov. 19, 1901." handwritten on verso.
