The check is to charge to account of John Whitely of Lansing Michigan. The corner of the check is printed with an advertisement for Parker, Holmes, and Company's Nerve Chewing Tobacco, depicting a sailor who has climbed up a flag pole to nail a banner bearing the product's name.

The check, printed by the Calvert Lithographing Company, originally read, "Michigan Savings Bank of Detroit," however "Michigan," was crossed out and replaced with "Dime." The check is stamped "paid."
