- Color postcard depicting a view along Broadway Street, facing southeast towards the intersection of Monroe and Randolph Streets. In view are the Hotel Ste. Claire, Breitmeyer Building, and a moonlight tower. Signs read "Murray's Millinery", "Consumers Clothing Company", "The Salamander", and "Mathias Steyskal Saloon and Restaurant". Printed on verso: Broadway was several years ago a street of boarding houses. In the expansion of the city's retail district it suddenly sprang into notice as a retail district, and is now one of the principal business streets. It connects Pingree Square with Grand Circus park and is asphalted for its complete length. The Breitmeyer building shows on the left and the Hotel Ste. Claire in the distance. Handwritten message on verso, postmarked Feb 23, 1912.

- Monochromatic glass-plate negative from the studio of Louis James Pesha depicting the bow and starboard side of the Atlas Steamship Company freighter GRIFFIN, under steam. The smoke stack is decorated with a large "H." A man in a hat stands near the bow of the ship. Several figures are gathered at the stern of the ship where a small boat with two people inside is being towed. Two figures are on deck near the hatch just before the aft cabin. A House on a tree-lined shoreline is visible in the background. The image is captioned with the year, "1916."

- Letter. Hand-written letter "To Sister" from Lt. Colonel Ava Sprague, dated Oct. 15, 1862. Letter reads, "My Dear Sister, I have only one excuse for not writing to you before that in my time is all taken up with Camp duties, and drilling and moving so much that we have noting settled. We are now about one mile from Sharp burgh on the Potomac near the Battle field of Antietam in Gibbon's Brigade, 1st Army Corps. Several of the Michigan regiments are close by us although not in our Brigade. Our living consists of hard biscuits, fat pork, and coffee. Breakfast, Dinner and Supper all alike. Bed one blanket on the ground and over coat over us, we have shelter tents which we have to get down on our knees and crawl into them. You may think strange we do not have more blankets with us. The only reason is the Government would not carry them. I had to leave my trunk in Washington and take nothing but what I could carry on by back. We do not expect to stay here long. All are very anxious to leave this camp as soon as possible. We cannot buy anything here. The stores in town are all shut up, the citizens most all left. Every house shows the effect of shot and shell. The fields are all cleaned of fences, nothing to be seen, but camps of soldiers for miles. Sight of us lays about - One house and wounded Rebels, some groaning and dying, while others are limping around. Their friends come to see them from the other side of the river and bring them luxuries, so that they seem to live better than we do. We have a fire show every day which consists of Balloon ascension that with the constant blowing of Fifes and beating of drums from, 'early morn to dewy eve' in all the amusements that is on the fields. I see by the paper that Capt. William is on the new boat with Capt. Vigen, I hope the change is better for him. I red a letter from home a days ago, Father did not like it because I had gone in the army. The folks were all well I wish you would write to me often whether I write or not and go to my house often and see and see how they get along if they need anything that you can do for them I hope you will accommodate. I expect to be paid off on the first of the next month when I shall send them money. Give my respects to William and your children. Remember to me all enquiring friends. Don't fail to see Betty, tell her you have heard from me and give her my love, I wrote her a few days ago. I remain your brother, A. W. Sprague."

- Ribbon-bound menu and program booklet for Thanksgiving dinner at the Hotel Cadillac, held on November 28, 1895. The cover is off-white paper with hand-painted lavender and white flowers, and with a ivory-colored ribbon threaded through it diagonally terminating in a bow. The interior pages are printed on cardstock. A list of dishes offered is on the first page. The Swart Brothers are listed as the proprietors at the bottom of the page. A list of musical selections and dances to be performed is on the following page. "1895," is printed on the back cover in a decorative script.

The photo was taken from an elevated position above Grand Circus Park, possibly from the David Whitney Building, peering north along Woodward Avenue. Central United Methodist Church, a piano store, a sign company, H.R. Leonard Furniture Company, St. John's Episcopal Church, the Elliott-Taylor-Wolfenden Company, Childs Restaurant, the Grand Circus Theatre, and a drug store topped with a Pastora Ten Cent Cigar billboard.

- Description:
- Detroit Fire Department active duty certificate, engraved by Capewell and Kimmel, and issued to John McDuff on April 24, 1858. The document bears the signatures of President Robert E. Roberts, Treasurer Alexander Paton, and Secretary Benjamin Vernor, as well as the signing date, March 15, 1858, beside a blue embossed Fire Department of the City of Detroit seal. Hand-colored illustrations of uniformed firefighters, firefighting equipment, the seal of the State of Michigan, and Neptune flanked by two winged monsters are bordered by scrollwork. The number "4" has been added to the helmets of the firefighters and to the apparatus, indicating McDuff's involvement in Lafayette Fire Company No. 4. "When danger calls we are prompt to fly / and bravely do or bravely die," has been handwritten around the upper arc of the large central circular motif. Illustrations of the fire engine of Lafayette Company No. 4, another pair of early apparatuses, and a sepia-toned photograph of Lafayette Company No. 4's apparatus on Wayne Street in front of their fire station near Larned Street, are pasted onto the certificate.

The recto lists the schedule for the CITY OF DETROIT II, CITY OF ST. IGNACE, WESTERN STATES, and EASTERN STATES of the Detroit and Cleveland Division, the CITY OF DETROIT III and CITY OF CLEVELAND III of the Detroit and Buffalo Division, the CITY OF THE STRAITS and STATE OF NEW YORK of the Cleveland and Toledo Line, and the CITY OF ALPENA II, CITY OF MACKINAC II, and CITY OF DETROIT II of the Mackinac Division. The verso bears a map showing the routes of the D&C line.
