- Michigan State University Africana Librarian Joe Lauer is interviewed by Peter Limb about Lauer's career at Michigan State and the development of the Africana Collection at the MSU Libraries. Lauer discusses the history of the International Library within the MSU Libraries and how MSU's involvement with the University of Nigeria at Nsukka during the 1960's created a demand by faculty for more books about Africa. Lauer talks about his own interest in African Studies, how he came to work at Michigan state and describes projects that he has been involved in over the years, both at MSU and on a national level. Lauer and Limb, who is also an MSU Africana Librarian, also discuss the challenges and rewards associated with Africana librarianship, focusing specifically on collection development and cataloging. - Globe Knitting Works is featured in this installment of "Western Michigan at Work" hosted by Dr. Willis Dunbar. Dunbar gives a history of the company, which was started by Norwegian immigrant E.A. Clemmons in 1897, and describes the process by which garments are made at Globe Knitting. Edgar Charles, one of the knitters, describes his duties and the working conditions while Jane Radich, who works in the cutting department, explains how the cutters shape and form the knitted fabric into garments.

- Don Stevens, former Michigan State University trustee and AFL-CIO board member, reminisces about his childhood, family, farming, his early education, and his experiences with labor unions and union organizing. Stevens talks about his early work life, hearing about unions during the auto sit-down strikes in 1936 and 1937, listening to radio preachers condemn unions, and failed attempts to unionize a laundry where he worked and later success in organizing dairy and retail workers in the Grand Rapids area in the 1940s. Stevens also discusses CIO leadership during the war, union political efforts regarding health and safety, unemployment insurance, higher wages, and seniority rights and his own involvement in the growing union movement and labor organizing. Stevens is interviewed by John Revitte, MSU professor of Labor and Industrial Relations. Part one of four.

- The Brundage Company is featured in this installment of "Western Michigan at work" hosted by Dr. Willis Dunbar. Dunbar focuses throughout the segment on the father-son nature of the Brundage Company, stressing the good relationship between H.F. Brundage and his sons, while exploring the history of the company. Dunbar also interviews Miles Batterson, the head of the cost department at Brundage, about why he chose to work at Brundage after completing his degree and how his college degree has aided him in his work.

- Former Michigan State University President Lou Anna K. Simon discusses her involvement with the MSU Faculty Grievance Policy (FGP) and the Faculty Grievance Official (FGO) when she served as MSU Provost and later as MSU President. Simon talks about the origins and evolution of the FGP, her experiences with several FGOs and changes to the FGP which she instituted. Simon also talks about the tension in universities between teaching and research, which she says affects hiring, tenure, salaries, promotions, and administrative priorities. She comments on the pressures of balancing the needs of the university with the wishes of the MSU Board of Trustees and the burden of being responsible for decisions made at every level of operation. Simon is interviewed by Robert Banks, former MSU associate provost and associate vice president for Academic Human Resources and John Revitte, former MSU professor of Human Resources and Labor Relations.

- Historian Dr. Matthew Pehl from Augustana College delivers a talk entitled, "The Moralistic God and the Factory System: Uncovering Religion in a 1950s Automobile Factory." Pehl looks at "The Detroit Industrial Mission" and the organization's efforts to both research and minister to workers in the Detroit area factories of the 1950s. Pehl reflects on their efforts and their findings of the influence class and denomination had on religious perspectives and workers' views of the nature of work. He describes the project that brought clergy into auto factories, their status as outsiders, the social dynamic in the plants, and the rejection by most workers of proselytizing in the workplace. He answers questions from the audience. Pehl is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series co-sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations, the MSU Museum, and the Lansing Stewardship Community/Motorcities Automobile National Heritage Area. - Jack Down, an R. E. Olds Transporation Museum volunteer and former REO Motor Car Company/Diamond-Reo Trucks, Inc. employee, recalls his experiences with the company and his life in the Greater Lansing, MI area. Down talks about his youth in East Lansing, attending Michigan State College, his jobs prior to working for REO, the factory buildings and land around the plant, the REO Clubhouse, and the beginnings of the REO Motor Car Company and the Oldsmobile and Fisher Body operations in Lansing. He also discusses the tragedy of owner Francis Cappaert raiding the REO worker's pension fund and the turmoil of the Lansing Labor Holiday and the labor confrontation known as the Battle of the Red Cedar. The interviewers are Shirley Bradley and Lisa Fine. Recorded as part of the REO Memories oral history project.

- Michael Rubner, Michigan State University's longest serving Faculty Grievance Official, talks about being born in Palestine and emigrating to the U.S., his education and what brought him to James Madison College at MSU in 1970. He also talks about why the FGO position interested him and his role in the creation of a grievance manual. Rubner says that he inherited an office which did not run smoothly and discusses the steps he took to improve things and that he decided to leave the position because of two faculty members who "made his life miserable". Rubner is interviewed by MSU Professor John Revitte, who himself is a former FGO. Revitte also reflects upon some of his experiences in the office and his revisions to the grievance manual.

- Keith Groty, former director of the Michigan State University School of Labor and Industrial Relations (SLIR), talks about his family, education and his career as a professor, labor mediator, arbitrator, and negotiator and finally becoming MSU's Assistant Vice President of Personnel and Employee Relations. Groty also talks about attempts to create a faculty union at MSU and the history of the MSU Faculty Grievance Office which he says was an attempt by the MSU to stop another push by faculty for unionization. Groty is interviewed by John Revitte, MSU professor emeritus of Labor and Industrial Relations, via telephone.

- Author Robert Morris delivers a talk entitled, "'Good and Sufficient Reason to Rebel': Detroit, the Briggs Manufacturing Company, and the People Who Created the UAW." Morris talks about the people of UAW Local 212, including his own father, and their successful efforts to unionize Briggs with the assistance of organizers Emil Mazey and Richard Frankensteen. Morris describes working conditions in the Briggs plant and how the UAW strategized to win contracts. He explains the connections between Briggs and notorious Detroit gangster Santo Perrone, assassination attempts against Walter and Victor Reuther, and a Federal investigation. Morris answers questions from the audience. Morris is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck.
