- Description:
- Workers with what appear to be mules and horses standing outside of buildings at Oakview. The D.M. Ferry Company, later known as the Ferry-Morse Seed Company, expanded operations from Detroit to Avon Township in 1902. Oakview Farm comprised the area between South Rochester Road, East Hamlin Road, John R Road, and East Auburn Road. In 1912, the company increased the size of the farm northward, so that it reached to East Avon Road. Oakview was the site of the company’s trial grounds and stock seed breeding operations until 1944. - This brick two-story block was built in 1868 by John V. Lambertson, who owned a mercantile, which he later passed on to his son, E. J. Lambertson. Businesses in this image include G.C. Dennis drugstore and H.H. Stalker. The building was razed in 1940 to make way for the D&C Building. - Description:
- After the Rochester Pavilion Hotel burned down in 1877, this site sat vacate for nearly 10 years. In 1888, R.O. Smith built this two-story brick hotel, called the Sidney House. In 1895, William Bowman renamed the business the Detroit Hotel, which it remained until it was destroyed by fire in 1927. Caption on postcard lists F.E. Arnold as the proprietor. - View of Western Knitting Mills across Chapman Pond, also known as Chapman Lake. The Western Knitting Mills factory was built in 1896 and produced knitted goods until 1939. The building was later owned by the McAleer Manufacturing Company, later known as the Higbie Manufacturing Company, and then ITT Higbie. - Description:
- Harvey J. Taylor’s hardware store was located on the west side of South Main Street and was built in 1889. In 1899, Taylor’s nephew, Charles Wallace Case, took over the store and it eventually became known as C.W. Case Hardware or just Case Hardware.
