- Description:
- After the Rochester Pavilion Hotel burned down in 1877, this site sat vacate for nearly 10 years. In 1888, R.O. Smith built this two-story brick hotel, called the Sidney House. In 1895, William Bowman renamed the business the Detroit Hotel, which it remained until it was destroyed by fire in 1927. Caption on postcard lists F.E. Arnold as the proprietor. - View of Western Knitting Mills across Chapman Pond, also known as Chapman Lake. The Western Knitting Mills factory was built in 1896 and produced knitted goods until 1939. The building was later owned by the McAleer Manufacturing Company, later known as the Higbie Manufacturing Company, and then ITT Higbie. - Buildings in downtown Birmingham located on the west side of [Old] Woodward, just north of Maple Road. The corner building in the foreground is occupied by Levinson's Department Store. In the background are residences along Maple Road and a firehose tower. The photographer was Louis James Pesha, who owned and operated Pesha Postcard Company of Marine City, Michigan.
