- First Day Cover postcard for the Christmas 1985 stamp of Luca della Robbia's Madonna and Child, from the collection of the Detroit Instiute of Arts. The postcard contains a print of Tom McNeely's painting of the Madonna and Child with white flowers, fruit, and three winged putti. Affixed to the upper right corner of the recto is the a stamp of Luca della Robbia's relief, canceled October 30, 1985, Detroit Michigan. Printed on verso: The Madonna and Child First Day of Issue: October 30, 1985 First Issue Location: Detroit, Michigan One of the most popular sculptors of the early Italian Renaissance, Luca della Robbia created some of the world's most beautiful works of sculpture in terra-cotta earthenware. Working with simple pottery clay, della Robbia created magnificent sculptures reliefs of white glazed earthenware against a stunning blue background. Most of this works featured the Madonna and Child, graceful choirs of angels, and the profiles of revered saints. His flawless figures and harmonious compositions with their unique charm and beauty have inspired generations of succeeding artists. One of della Robbia's most famous works is features on one of America's 1985 Christmas stamps. Depicting the pure white figures of the Madonna and Child, this magnificent sculptured relief was completed in the year 1450.
