- Description:
- This is a small collection of personal memorabilia, records and correspondence, and an oral history recording with Ernest A. "Ernie" Nostrant, who worked for Diamond Reo for many years. He was an employee during volatile times of buyouts and pension problems, and his records and interview reflect some of this upheaval. Some of the contents are restricted due to personally identifying information. The collection includes some small ephemera: three of Nostrant's ID badges (two with Diamond Reo logos; the third with "Superintendent" below his name); an employee ID card from the Diamond Reo Truck Division, White Motor Corporation (undated); a fabric Diamond Reo patch; and one of Nostrant's business cards from Diamond Reo Trucks. Some White material is in this collection: an 1968 annual report, and a 1970 stockholder proxy report. There is also a file of Nostrant's insurance policy information, pay stubs, and credit union statements. Following the failure of Diamond Reo under ownership of Francis A. Cappaert in the 1970s, there were problems with the pensions of retired employees including Nostrant. Congressman Bob Carr took up this issue as part of an amendment to the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). A file of correspondence between Carr, Nostrant, and others about a class action lawsuit and legislation is part of this collection. In addition, an oral history interview was recorded by MSU student Zachariah Torrey with Ernie Nostrant at Nostrant's home in Grand Ledge, Michigan, on March 14, 2018. They discussed Nostrant's work history and the contents of this collection. The interview audio file is linked in this record. This collection may have been a garage sale purchase by David Caterino, who then left the collection to the Capital Area District Libraries. Student Zachariah Torrey assisted CADL Local History in processing this collection. Mr. Nostrant had no idea how the materials had come to be in Caterino's possession, but has allowed the library to maintain ownership in addition to adding a few small items and his oral history interview.
