The Turkish Army surrounded the city during the British retreat from Ctesiphon during the Mesopotamia Campaign. Flood waters and the failure of a British relief column to reach the city would result in General Charles Townshend surrendering to the Ottomans.

After their initial success in the invasion of East Prussia in August 1914, the Germans mounted a massive counter-offensive and destroyed a Russian army at the Battle of Tannenberg.

- Georges Desson was interned in this cell at Fort Hirson, a French fortress south of Maubeuge near the border with Belgium. The French did not maintain this fortress before the war so it remained generally intact during the German advance into northern France. Desson joined several French internees in captivity.
