- A group of Allied tuberculosis patients stand outside the hospital ward in the quarantine camp at Giessen. A German sentry stands on guard duty to the left along the camp fence. War prisoners detected of communicable diseases were isolated from the general prison camp population to prevent the outbreak of epidemics.

- French and Russian prisoners "air out" their mattresses in the sun outside their barrack in the prison compound at Zwickau. Prisoners had to periodically clean out their bedding and linens to eliminate vermin which could quickly spread diseases in the cramped conditions in the enlisted men's barracks.

- French officers participate in a class in their dining hall in the prison camp at Halle-am-Saal. Courses provided prisoners with mental diversions and the opportunity to improve themselves for better employment opportunities after the war.

- Interned French civilians and POWs accompany the casket of a dead friend to the cemetery at Parchim. The procession is led by a cross bearer and the casket is draped with flowers. The Catholic priest, who will officiate at the funeral, marches in front of the casket. German officers pay their respects standing among the French war prisoners.

- A POW distributes letters outdoors to French and Belgian prisoners at Zwickau. These letters have been approved for dissemination by the German censors. Note the white identification badges sewn on the left breast pocket of the prisoners' uniforms.

- British prisoners compete in a soccer game in the prison compound at Dyrotz. In the background, to the left, are the typical wooden barracks found in German prison camps. The larger building to the right, however, may have been the barracks for French prisoners captured at the fortress of Mauberuge in 1914, as indicated by the sign over the entrance.

French and Russian prisoners relax in the shade of a shed to the right. A group of POW's in the middle of the photograph are in a playful mood; one of the French prisoners gives his fellow inmate a pair of "horns" with his fingers.

- A music class at Goettingen is packed with French prisoners of war as an instructor explains a point on the chalkboard. Many prisoners took advantage of the opportunity to learn how to read and write or explore topics that they had no time to study before their incarceration.
