Notes:
Comical ad in "The Ruhleben Camp Magazine" for the Cubbie Temperance Hall. The facility is ideally located for tourists seeking relaxation. The ad shows various views of the camp and the many conveniences patrols enjoy, including a view of the artificial lake and the construction of the building above sea level (drainage was a problem for parts of the camp).

2. Cover of the "Ruhleben Camp Magazine" from Ruhleben

Notes:
This was the cover of the Christmas 1916 edition of "The Ruhleben Camp Magazine." A harlequin and his dog sit in their prison room on top of an American Express box with pen in hand. Two cornucopias spew out parcels and the margins show the internees involved in a wide range of activities. The two articles featured in this 50 Pfennige journal are "Fun and Spandau" and "The Fashionable Tailors."

3. YMCA War Prisoners' Aid Monthly Magazine "Le Messager"

Notes:
The World's Alliance of YMCA's published "The Messenger to Prisoners of War" in a wide range of languages for prisoners of war in Allied and Central Power hands. This issue was the French version, published in December 1917, and distributed in German prison camps. The YMCA sought to provide POW's with educational and devotional readings to help prisoners pass their time and improve their future lot in life.

4. Ernst Satorius, Editor of "Le Messager," a Monthly YMCA Magazine for POWs

Notes:
The editor of The Messenger to the Prisoners of War works on the copy for the latest edition of this monthly newspaper. The Messenger was published in French, English, German, Russian, Serbian, Italian, and Bulgarian by the World's Alliance of YMCA's. The contents included spiritual and moral material, but focused primarily on historical, scientific, and literary articles. The first editor of "The Messenger" was W. Gottsched and he was later replaced by Ernst Sartorius.

This cartoon is from "The Ruhleben Camp Magazine," Christmas 1916 edition, showing "Sunny Jim" being intercepted by a German sentry as the latter scales the wall. The prison camp at Ruhleben was surrounded by a high wooden fence.

6. Office of the "Commission Romande des Internes" in Geneva

Notes:
The editor and a secretary work in the office of the Commission Romande des Internes in the World's Alliance headquarters in Geneva. The Associaiton produced a monthly newspaper from this office for prisoners repatriated to Switzerland for the duration of the war.
