- Michigan State University Music Librarian Mary Black Junttonen talks about R. Nathaniel Dett, Michigan resident and world renowned classical conductor and pianist. Junttonen relates how Dett, of African-Canadian and African-American decent, attended Oberlin College in Ohio, toured the world teaching and composing and eventually settled in Battle Creek, Michigan. Junttonen plays selections of Dett's compositions and explains his influence on American music. She also describes Dett materials held in the MSU Archives and other collections. She answers questions from the audience. Junttonen is introduced by MSU librarian Michael Rodriguez. Part of the Michigan State University Libraries' Colloquia series. - First Lady Michelle Obama welcomes Smokey Robinson, John Legend, Berry Gordy, and Robert Santelli to the White House to lead a youth workshop on the legacy and history of Motown Records. Santelli opens with a history of the Motown era and Gordy reflects on first being a boxer and his start in music. Robinson describes growing up in the same neighborhood as Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and they all discuss becoming associated with Motown, launching their careers, writing songs, and how groups were started. They take questions and John Legend sings a Stevie Wonder song.

- Michigan folk music icon Bob Blackman talks about the folk music genre, how it has been defined and marketed, its roots, history, many forms, and commercial success. Blackman focuses on Anglo-American music with its Celtic roots and explains the origins of the music. He also describes how the music has evolved over centuries and uses lyrics and numerous musical excerpts to demonstrate his points. Blackman answers questions from the audience. Blackman is introduced by Michigan State University Librarian Jane Arnold. Part of the Michigan State University Libraries' Colloquia Series. Held in the MSU Main Library.

- Karl Kalsow and his dance band came to the area from Minneapolis to perform at the Mayfair, near Lake Lansing in Haslett, Mich. They had many engagements there with other musicians and novelty acts during the summer of 1940. In 1941, they had moved on to the Villa Bee club, two miles east of Jackson, Mich. This photograph appeared in the Lansing State Journal, August 4, 1940, page 10.

- This is a collection of photographs and digitized doodles, fine art, and commercial art created by Dennis Preston. Also included are audio recordings of his own songs and music projects that he participated in. Some video is also part of the collection. The collection is representative of his work but not comprehensive; more will be added over time. Dennis grew up in Lansing, Michigan. He began freelance illustrating while still in high school (Eastern). His first commissioned work was from local TV celebrity Len Stuttman. Len had him draw animal cartoon characters for a Woldumar Nature Center poster. In the late 1960s and early '70s, Dennis was known for the concert posters he designed. Also at that time, he painted murals, designed posters and created newspaper advertising for the stores Sounds & Diversions and Free Spirit in Lansing. He also made drawings for Joe and Robbie Levine's education company that produced teaching aids internationally.
