- Description:
- This small collection contains personal memorabilia and correspondence collected by mother and daughter Ursula M. Greene Lowell (1861-1936) and Ruth Lowell Oliver (1902-1994). Ruth was Ursula's only child with her husband Herbert "Bertie" J. Lowell (1861-1935). Among Ursula Greene Lowell's materials are several cabinet card photographs and tiny matted tintype photos, most taken in New York State, and all but one (S. A. Greene) are unidentified. There are some pieces of family correspondence dating from 1802 to 1847. Ruth Lowell Oliver was born when both of her parents were 40 years old. Based on a small amount of her memorabilia, she attended Lansing High School in approximately 1919-1921. She also attended both Michigan Agricultural College (Michigan State University) and Michigan State Normal School (which became Eastern Michigan University). In census records she was listed as a teacher. Her husband Glen A. Oliver (1889-1970) was 15 years older and a farmer. They lived in a rural area near Wacousta in Clinton County, where their parents and grandparents had lived, for most of their lives. They did not have children. Ruth's memorabilia includes several photographs of women's sports teams from M. A. C. dated 1922-1925. There is also a photograph printed on pink paper of a bonfire, "Michigan Aggie Bonfire, Nov. 10, 1922." The collection contains approximately 120 letters sent to Ursula Greene between 1882 and 1888, with their original envelopes, and another 38 letters and postcards between Ruth Lowell and her parents from about 1919, also with envelopes. This collection appears to have been an estate sale purchase by David Caterino, who then left the collection to the Capital Area District Libraries.
