- Description:
- White cotton dress with wide, collar-less neck and slightly belled sleeves. Bodice and skirt gathered; tight gauging along center-front and center-back waist. Empty whalebone casing at center-front. Self-fabric piping at neck, waist and sleeves. White embroidery at hem; hem and cuffs finished with irregular scalloping and crochet trim. Two tucks on skirt. Bodice lined with plain-weave cotton; sleeves and skirt unlined. Bodice open at center-back; hammered-wire hook and eye closures. Hand-sewn. - Description:
- This dress, along with the dotted Swiss and other calico dresses, was worn by Elizabeth Parke Firestone at the 1921 Vagabonds Camping Expedition after Elizabeth and Harvey, Jr. were asked to cut their Lake Louise honeymoon short to join the Vagabonds (per Mrs. Martha Ford). It therefore seems likely that the dress was worn during the honeymoon. The dress is similar, in some ways, to the dress Elizabeth Parke Firestone wore for her wedding, and it is possible that she designed this and the other calico dresses. The dress is plain, unlined, and not particularly sophisticated, but attractive.Born in Decatur, Illinois in 1897 Elizabeth Parke married Harvey S. - Description:
- Cameos were traditionally carved from stone as carvers carefully worked in layers of agate, cutting away lower layers of color and leaving, in relief, layers of white or ivory colored strata. It is difficult and expensive work.In the early nineteenth century Italian carvers began carving cameos from shell, working the strata to leave white layers in relief on the cameo. This shell cameo carving reduced the price of cameos somewhat. The fineness of some of the best shell cameo cutters rivals those of stone cameo cutters.Cameos were also cut from granite, coral, and lava in this era. Cameo jewelry rendered with the heads of the ancients were particularly popular souvenirs for those on The Grand Tour, which were extended European tours especially through France, Germany, Italy, and Switzerland; commonly taken at this time by youth of the aristocracy as part of their education.

- Hat clips were attached to edges or bands of hats for that extra style or color. In this period they would have been added to small rather tight cloche hats; this Art Deco clip would have added real flair. This appears to be of phenol formaldehyde, often called Bakelite.Bakelite is really the trade name for plastics produced by Bakelite Ltd. in England and Bakelite Corporation in the United States; it is unclear if this was truly made by Bakelite. Most Art Deco plastics are referred to as Bakelite, however.

- Description:
- Tortoise shell was a much used material in small decorative accessories for many years. It is quite malleable when heated, and carefully chosen, the stock can have interesting color and mottling. In addition, it is easily carved and fine patterns can be created from it.Pique work infuses gold into the soft tortoiseshell, very much like inlay.Pique pose lays strips of gold in the surface and pique point, which this piece includes, has fine rods of gold embedded in it.Fine pique work was created in Europe and was popular in the nineteenth century; however, by the 1860s cheaper examples were made in America and in the 1870s Britain. This piece appears to date from the 1860s or early 1870s and, while nice, is not of the quality of some fine earlier pieces in the collection. The presence of the ancient's face on a carved amphora, and its central medallion shape, indicates an 1860's piece.

- Description:
- These earrings are quite typical gold metal and black enamel earrings dating from about 1870.This gold metal and black enamel decoration is quite popular 1870-1890.However, the decoration on the plaques appears to be from the late 1860s or early 1870s and the length of the earrings indicates a date of the 1870.By the 1880s earrings had become shorter to prevent them from becoming entangled in lacy collars; these are too long to date from the 1880s.
