- Description:
- Charles Sherwin Chapman (1864-1912) was born in Vermont and helped to establish the Western Knitting Mills in Rochester along with his brother, William Clark Chapman. He married Minnie May Robbins in 1891 and had two children, Frank and Doris. He had an estate built on the north end of downtown Rochester in 1899, designed by Detroit architect Albert Kahn. Sometimes referred to as Oak Bluff, the residence remained in the Chapman family until the 1960s, when it was sold for redevelopment. It was demolished in 1968. - Description:
- A child sits on the stoop outside of a doorway and a bicycle can be seen leaning against the building. The Western Knitting Mills factory was built in 1896 and produced knitted goods until 1939. The building was later owned by the McAleer Manufacturing Company, later known as the Higbie Manufacturing Company, and then ITT Higbie. In 1994 the Rochester Mills Beer Company restored the building and it now operates as a restaurant and brewery. Addressed to Miss Julia Glefke of Mount Clemens, Michigan from Arthur Boyd.
