- Description:
- It is particularly interesting that this medal was presented to a young lady.We do not know about Rev. Carll's Academy, however, it is plausible that it was a female academy.Female academies were established after the American Revolution, particularly in the early nineteenth century, for training future wives and mothers for rearing literate citizens of the New Republic. These schools included traditional subjects such as religion (note that this is Rev. Carll's Academy and surely emphasized religion), history, some arithmetic and reading. Most also included instruction in some kinds of women's domestic crafts such as needlework, sewing, darning, etc. as domesticity was an essential skill as well. There is an Eleanor Potts listed in census records born about 1812 in Pennsylvania; this medal was purchased in Pennsylvania and this may be the original owner of the medal.Research pending.

- Description:
- This dress was worn by Thankful Scott Merritt, wife of Benjamin Merritt. She joined the Society of Friends in 1811, later became a preacher, and was the great-grandmother of the donor. The Merritts were New York Quakers: In Troy from 1813 to 1815; New York City from 1815 to 1830; Troy again by 1834; White Creek from 1842 to 1845; and Staten Island by 1848. Mr. Merritt was first a China merchant and afterwards a dry good merchant. The apron-front dress was very popular from 1828 to 1832. This also shows the emergence of the gigot sleeve; the sleeve and short bodice are early 19th century. The inner bodice would have been convenient for nursing and adaptable for pregnancy. The neckline would have been filled with a kerchief, fichu or chemisette.

- Description:
- According to our records, the hat belonged to Henry Ford.Born in 1863 on a farm in what is now Dearborn, Michigan, Henry Ford parlayed a youthful aptitude for engineering into a career as an automotive innovator and founder/president of Ford Motor Company. Among his ideas were the introduction of the first moving automobile assembly line, affordable pricing, fair wages for employees, and the vertical integration of manufacturing processes from raw materials to the finished product. His many philanthropic accomplishments included the establishment (with his wife, Clara) of a nationally ranked hospital, the founding (with his son, Edsel) of the Ford Foundation, and the creation of The Henry Ford, an indoor/outdoor museum complex celebrating American ingenuity.

- Cameos traditionally were cut in stone; however, Italian carvers found a way to make these exquisite shell cameos in the early nineteenth century. This is an interesting depiction of an angel guiding a child as he walks near a serpent, which often symbolized temptation. It is likely an allusion to a child being guided by God on the right path.

- The machine stitching on these boots is extraordinarily tight and fine--fabulous. Very narrow outer sole for a long, skinny foot. They could be wedding boots. Donor Mrs. Ethel G. Douglas, of 5th Ave. in New York City, was born circa 1885 in Pennsylvania. It is plausible that these were her mother's shoes, perhaps worn at a wedding around 1875.

- This was a style Mrs. Firestone favored in the 1960s. We have several examples of it covered in other materials. This pair was stored on a wooden shoe tree. Two swatches of fabric are taped to the tree: one matching the shoes, the other a floral print which was likely the fabric of a coordinating dress. Mrs. Firestone had most of her shoes custom made to match specific dresses or outfits. Born in Decatur, Illinois in 1897 Elizabeth Parke married Harvey S. Firestone Jr., son of Firestone Tire and Rubber Company founder Harvey S. Firestone, in 1921.Once described by a friend as, "the most luxurious woman in the history of luxury," Elizabeth Parke Firestone's clothing collection illustrates her impeccable taste in fashion.
