- Dr. Joseph Varga, assistant professor in the Indiana University Department of Labor Studies, delivers a talk entitled "GE lies : surveying the post-industrial landscape of southern Indiana, 1980-2012." Varga describes the history of protest movements, particularly against General Electric, in response to the continuing de-industrialization and anti-union legislation in southern Indiana. Varga is introduced by Michigan State University Professor John P. Beck. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series co-sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum. Held in the MSU Museum Auditorium.

- Thomas M. Grace, survivor of the shootings at Kent State University and author of "Kent State: Death and Dissent in the Long Sixties", delivers a presentation entitled, "Life and Death at Kent State: 1960s Student Dissent as a Working Class Movement." Grace discusses the history of the shootings at Kent State University and explains the social movement that arose at the university during the late 1960's and early 1970's. He talks about the protests in opposition to the Vietnam War that occurred at Kent State in 1970, the shots fired by Ohio National Guard troops and the economic climate in the U.S. which he says helped to fuel an "anti-war mentality" among college students during that time. Grace answers questions from the audience. He is introduced by Thomas Dietz, professor of Sociology and Environmental Science and Policy at Michigan State University. Part of the "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU Department of Sociology, the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum. - Ruth Ann King moderates a discussion of the era of student unrest, activism and strikes on the Michigan State University campus in reaction to the shootings at Kent State University in May 1970 and the U.S. bombing of Cambodia during the Vietnam War. Participants talk about where they were during the protests, what they witnessed, and their level of participation. A former military science professor recalls interim president Walter Adams and his interaction with the students at Demonstration Hall and a discussion ensues about the differences between Adams and President Clifton Wharton.

Mills discusses the relationship between officer education and training, civil unrest during the 1960's, his involvement in the formation of the Lansing chapter of the Fraternal Order of Police, and his time as head of the Lansing Police Department Helicopter unit.

- Four photographs documenting a meeting of about 100 citizens and business owners for the formation of a permanent organization. The meeting, held in the basement of a then-vacant building at Grand and East Michigan avenues that formerly housed Vandervoort Hardware, was to do with protesting the installation of parallel parking on East Michigan Avenue and a change to parallel parking on Washington Avenue. This meeting garnered front-page coverage in the Lansing State Journal on May 23, 1958.

- Dr. William Derman, Michigan State University Professor of Anthropology, talks about his career-long effort to combine intellectual engagement with political activism and social change. Derman is interviewed by Dr. David Wiley, Director of the MSU African Studies Center and Peter Limb, MSU Libraries Area Studies Librarian. Derman recalls his time at the University of Michigan, joining Students for a Democratic Society, teaching African American students in Detroit, his anti-war efforts, and his work as an anti-Apartheid activist. He also talks about his work in South Africa with land use planning, water rights, and education and later shifting his focus to Zimbabwe to assist development and resettlement projects. Derman questions the ability of younger faculty and students to be engaged both as academics and citizens. He sees a low level of activism in the current faculty and student body and is not sure how the community will respond to current and future challenges. Part of the African Studies Interview Series sponsored by the MSU Libraries and the African Studies Center.
