Civil War Soldiers and Sailors Monument

Notes:
Located at the intersection of Fulton St., Division Ave., and Monroe St. Tall, 5-level monument topped by a uniformed Union soldier holding the barrel of a rifle, with the stock on the ground by his feet. Just below the soldier is the lettering “Petersburg.” The next level down is a square pillar with drapery. Below that a plaque with the lettering: “In Honor of the Soldiers From Kent County, 1861-1865, Erected 1885." Below this is a tall square with a battle scene seen in relief, with an angel statue in front of it. The ground level is decorated with patriotic motifs and names of battle locations such as Appomattox, Mobile, Fort Sumter. In the background can be seen the Grand Rapids Press building and part of the Grand Rapids Herald building, with the Michigan Craft Shops Furniture building between the two.
