Designed to help mothers teach their children to read. The 54 plates contain 324 illustrations. Accompanied by an 8 p. "Advertisement," and 5 cards in various sizes: a folded card of consonants followed by blank squares, vowels "to place after the consonants," an alphabet "for cutting into single letters," "A frame on which to place the moveable letters for spelling words," and a card with 3 rectangles to be cut out "for concealing the cuts till the names have been read." Originally issued in a wooden box, Cf. Welch for extensive description. Plates number XXXVII-LIV correspond with those in The father's gift, published by Jacob Johnson, 1804.
