Churches; Methodist; Central M. E. Church. Exterior. .

Description:
Exterior view of the Central United Methodist Church on Adams Road near Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. The church, designed by English architect Gordon W. Lloyd was completed in 1867. "Unlike the Episcopalians, the Methodists were not bound to a traditional architectural concept, advantageous for both seating and lighting are the broad semi-octagonal transepts, large gables on the faces of the transepts serve to break up the external mass of the building ... an interesting three-dimensional quality was achieved and triviality avoided by the restrained ornament and rugged masonry, a strong vertical accent was provided by a corner tower with a broach spire," from "The Buildings of Detroit: A History," by W. Hawkins Ferry.
