Detroit Fire Department active duty certificate, engraved by Capewell and Kimmel, and issued to Louis Specht on May 14, 1857. The document bears the signatures of President Jerome Croul, Treasurer Alexander Paton, and Secretary Benjamin Vernor, beside a silver embossed Fire Department of the City of Detroit seal. Hand-colored illustrations of uniformed firefighters, an early fire apparatus and firefighting equipment, the seal of the State of Michigan, and Neptune flanked by two winged monsters are bordered by scrollwork. The number "12" has been added to the helmets of the firefighters and to the apparatus, likely indicating Specht's involvement in Woodbridge Fire Company No. 12. "Great grand father of Daneil Murray Embach," has been handwritten in the lower left corner.
