- Description:
- This paper explores the usefulness and feasibility of using emergency aid and food aid to stimulate development processes during periods of famine in Africa. The proposition that relief aid can be utilised in creative ways that directly benefit individual households by increasing the value of their assets is made in a forceful way. Diversified sources of rural income resulting from this strategy reinforce the capacity of the most vulnerable households to protect themselves against the effects of future drought. This may seem a somewhat ambitious objective. However, even under considerable personal stress people have a tremendous will to survive and to invest in their future if given the chance. If this is true, then the bulk of emergency food aid supplied to African countries is used inefficiently because it does not offer families this possibility.

- Description:
- Social work practice in Zimbabwe is in the midst of change, moving away from its colonial legacy of social work as an instrument of social control to a model that is increasingly developmental with a focus on social change (Kaseke. 1991). As a result of such changes, assessing the outcome of social work education and training in Zimbabwe becomes particularly critical at this time. The outcome study reported here is a follow-up of work completed by Brand (1983) of the employment and educational experiences of Diploma students between 1971 and 1981 at the School of Social Work in Harare.

- Description:
- The paper examines the inter-relationships between the environment and the health status of women and children in Nikrowa. Women interact with the bio-physical and social environments in their different occupational and domestic roles. In Nikrowa they farm, fish, collect water and firewood, engage in food processing and preparation. They also bear many children. The author points out that this hard physical labour results in continuous body aches and pains for women. Among children, environment-related illnesses such as malaria, measles, dysentry and diarrhoea are prevalent The geographical isolation of the village limits accessibility to modem healthcare facilities and consequently traditional therapies are relied upon for treating these illnesses.
