- Description:
- Interior view facing the altar of the Mariner's Church of Detroit. The Gothic Revival style church built in 1849 by architects Calvin N. Otis and Hugh Moffat was established to serve mariners. "Before long Mariners’ became a point on the Underground Railway, assisting the freedom of former slaves through a tunnel from its basement to the waterfront. Through the years many tenants occupied the bottom floor of Mariners; this was anticipated to pay the the bills, for it was known that as sailors could not afford pew rentals, neither could they give sufficient tithes to maintain the parish," from the Mariner's Church of Detroit's website.

- Description:
- Interior view of the Central United Methodist Church on Adams Road near Woodward Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. The church, designed by English architect Gordon W. Lloyd was completed in 1867. "Unlike the Episcopalians, the Methodists were not bound to a traditional architectural concept, advantageous for both seating and lighting are the broad semi-octagonal transepts, large gables on the faces of the transepts serve to break up the external mass of the building ... an interesting three-dimensional quality was achieved and triviality avoided by the restrained ornament and rugged masonry, a strong vertical accent was provided by a corner tower with a broach spire," from "The Buildings of Detroit: A History," by W. Hawkins Ferry.
