An additional parchment sheet (135 x 260 mm) is attached by the tag behind the plica., Back of a folded indenture chirograph document (conveyance) of Penelope Warde of Great Dunmow, Essex, widow to Richard Phillips, who was a wheelwright, for ₤10 15s + ₤8 to be paid to her 10s each quarter day with grants of parcels of land in Great Dunmow towards Chelmsford., and Written in England, county of Essex and dated 1 December 1659 in document. Document was folded five times and severaly worn with several holes along folds., First initial “T” enlarged and flourished., Indenture document of Samuel Ladd of Chartham, Kent, England to Thomas Jackson of the Precincts of Canterbury Cathedral for ₤400 and messuage, including cottage, two gardens, two orchards, and three acres of land in Chartham. Ball-shaped “pendant” seal, attached, and made of red wax, on parchment tag bearing the device of a winged heart., Written in English secretary script (cursiva libraria). Black ink flaking and nearly illegible in many places., and Written in England and dated 8 April, 11 Charles I (1635). Four inscriptions on the dorse: two in an English secretary hand similar to the main text and two in a later crusive hand; the name of Elizabeth Ladd is mentioned along with the names Edward Nordey (sp?) and Godfrey Pyard (sp?). Formerly Phillipps no. 31801; the number “31801” located in center of dorse. Gift of the Department of History, Western Michigan University to WMU Special Collections in 1999.

A 5-line flourished intial “T” opens the text., Indenture (mortgage) between John and Elizabeth Raymond, Essex and Dorothy Collard of Barnstone, Essex for ₤350 to John and Elizabeth Raymond for conveyance of capital massuage, Chelmshoes house and barns, stables, dove house [etc.] and lands in great Maplest[de?] and Deetingthorp [sp?], Essex. Containing 66 acres. Name of John Richardson mentioned. Two red-wax, impressed seals (design not visible), each stamped on tags., Written in clear mixed hand (secretary and italic conflations). Opening words and later, emphasized in larger bastard anglicana script. Pricking in both margins., and Written in England, county of Essex and dated 25 August 2 James II. At middle center in the near-contemporary hand, “15/18 [?] | Mr and Mrs Raymond | to | Mrs Collard} Release” and three illgible words in a near contemporary hand followed by “1686.” Also at the middle center of dorse in a later hand: “9.” Gift of the Western Michigan University Department of History to Special Collections in 1999.
