- Dr. Laurie Sommers, professor of music and folklore ethnomusicology at Michigan State University, presents, "Songs of miners, lumberjacks and schooner men : Alan Lomax's Michigan legacy." Dr. Sommers delves into the history of Michigan's folk songs and their preservation, focusing on the work of Alan Lomax. Dr. Sommers is introduced by MSU Professor John P. Beck. - The Jayme Stone Lomax Project performs a program entitled "Work songs from the woods and the waters : the extraordinary music of everyday folks". Focusing on songs collected by folklorist and field recording pioneer Alan Lomax, banjo player and vocalist Jayme Stone talks about bringing together his group of roots musicians to revive and perform the songs captured by Lomax. Moira Smiley is on accordion and vocals, Joseph Phillips on upright bass and vocals, and Sumaia Jackson on fiddle and vocals. Librarian Michael Rodriguez convenes the event. The musicians are introduced by John P. Beck, professor, Michigan State University School of Human Resources and Labor Relations. Part of the Library Colloquia Series and "Our Daily Work/Our Daily Lives" Brown Bag series sponsored by the MSU School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the MSU Museum.

- Description:
- Rose Stornant talks about her service as a legal secretary in the Women's Army Corps during World War II. Stornant recalls her training and her different U.S. assignments before being shipped to England in March 1944. She remembers being in Salisbury England watching the gliders and Airborne troop transports heading for Normandy on D-Day and says that she wasn't sent to France until November 1944. Stornant says that she was in Paris during the Battle of the Bulge at the end of 1944 and also talks about Christmas in Paris, the celebrations on V-E Day, Bastille Day, and V-J Day and finally earning enough points to be sent back to the States. She says that she worked in Chicago for a short time after the war, but finally returned to Lansing, MI to reclaim her old job. Stornant is interviewed by Elsie Hornbacher.
