- Photograph. Sepia-toned photo showing a group of men who are standing beside railroad boxcar that is partly tipped over. Handwritten text on the lower edge of the photo shows "A split switch. Volunteer switchmen, May, 1920." Evidently, a switch malfunctioned which caused the wheel truck at the right end of the boxcar to come off the tracks while the wheel truck at the left end appears to still be on the tracks. The photo was probably taken at a Michigan Central railroad yard near Detroit.

- Photograph. Sepia-toned photo showing the construction of a railroad bridge over the Rouge River. Printed text in the upper left corner of the photo shows the number, "35," and "M.C.R.R. River Rouge Bascule Bridge; Superstructure; Erecting East Counterweight Truss; Photo W. B. James; Jan. 31, 1920." The view looks northward on the east side of the Rouge River and shows the tower post structure which provides support for the bridge counterweights. A construction crane can be seen in the right background as well as the 2-story brick building for the bridge operator.

The photo was probably taken during the switchmen's strike at a Michigan Central railroad yard near Detroit.

- Photograph. Sepia-toned photo showing the temporary concrete mixing plant for the construction of a railroad bridge over the Rouge River. Printed text in the upper left corner of the photo shows the number, "12," and additional text in top center area shows "M.C.R.R. River Rouge Bascule Bridge; Foundations; June 4, 1919; Mixing Plant." The view shows the aggregate hopper being loaded by a construction crane and bucket that can be seen at the left side of the photo. Two workmen are standing near the concrete mixer on the right side of the plant. The concrete mixer is positioned in order to pour the finished mixture into a second construction crane bucket that will carry the concrete to its placement location. Railroad tracks, temporary construction buildings, and piles of construction materials can be seen in the center area of the photo. Factory buildings and houses can be seen in the right background. A temporary construction building near the center of the photo has two signs on the roof. The text is not quite legible, but the sign on the left shows "[?] Foundations [?] Missouri Bridge & Iron Co. [?]" and the sign on the right shows "[?] Superstructure [?] Wisconsin Bridge & Iron Co. [?]."

The view looks southeastward from the bank of the Rouge River and shows the truss structure that supports the bridge counterweights and lift span. The lift span is located at the far right side of the structure and a construction crane is lifting one of the structural members into position. The 2-story brick building for the bridge operator can be seen at the far left side of the photo. Near the center of the photo, a sign on the top of the river bank shows "Cables, Do Not Drag Anchor."

- Photograph. Sepia-toned photo showing the old M.C.R.R. railroad swing bridge being removed. The view looks northwestward across the Rouge River and shows the old bridge being loaded onto barges. It appears that two barges had been partially filled with water in order to lower their freeboard elevations. The barges were then moved under the old bridge and are now being pumped out as seen by the steam-powered pumps that are operating on both barges. As the pumping continues, the rising barges will lift the old bridge off of its foundation so that it can be towed away. Many workmen are standing on the old bridge and on the two barges.

The view shows two workmen who are standing between two large steel buckets that are used for placing concrete underwater. The workmen appear to be attaching cables and chains to the tops of the buckets so that they can be lifted into position by a construction crane.
