Handwritten text on the verso shows: "If there are any of my descendants in this city or state at the time this box is opened, I ask that they be given this, my last working card of the closing century. To them I say, for the last 9 years, this city has been kind to me and my family. Also that my Xmas present was a Bible from my wife and I gave the same to her. We look upon the 'old book' as a lamp to our life and a guide to our pathway. C. H. Johnson."
