- This German orderly is carrying several loaves of "war bread" which will be distributed to the Allied prisoners at Magdeburg. Due to the effectiveness of the Allied blockade of the North Sea, the bread issued to POW's had little relationship to pre-war goods as bakers substituted a number of ingredients for the flour. British prisoners also preferred white bread to German dark breads which reduced the appeal of war bread.

- This drawing depicts a French officer distributing pay to British officers in Magdeburg. Prisoners in this camp received metal discs in lieu of German money. These discs could be traced back to individual prisoners, a practice designed to reduce bribery of the German guards.

- Prisoner of War guard duty was almost as monotonous for the guards as it was for the prisoners (although the penalties for German guards caught in the dereliction of duty encouraged greater vigilance). In this drawing of the guard room at Magdeburg, German troops enjoy some holiday festivities with tankards of beer, carol singing, and a decorated Christmas tree.

- Allied prisoners of war had strict orders forbidding fraternization with German guards. There were few restrictions, however, on POW attempts at improving their relations with guard dogs. In this drawing, a British officer and a Russian officer offer some scraps to a guard dog, while a German sentry stands watch at the compound fence.

- This is a view of the prison near Magdeburg where the German government imprisoned Polish General Josef Pilsudski until the Armistice on the Western Front was signed in November 1918. He returned to Warsaw to assume leadership of the new Polish state.

- A German orderly issues the latest war news from the front as part of the morning sick call for British and French officers at Magdeburg. Note the boots and shoes drying out on top of the ovens inside the dormitory to the left and the tea pots on top of the oven in the center.
