- Dr. Paul Sangren and honorary degrees recipients L. C. Mohr, Theodore L. Brownyard, Cleo Hartwig, and Earl J. McGrath at Western Michigan College of Education Commencement, June 1951. Commencement speaker Dr. Earl J. McGrath, US commissioner of Education, was awarded a degree of Doctor of Laws. Miss Cleo Hartwig, nationally known sculptress and a graduate of Western Michigan College, received a degree of Master of Fine Arts. L. C. Mohr, superintendent of schools at South Haven, received a degree of Doctor of Education. Theodore L. Brownyard, chemist in the Bureau of Ordnance, Navy Department receive a Doctor of Science.
