- Description:
- This is a collection of approximately 500,000 pages of microform material from one or more departments of the City of Lansing, which date from 1964 to about 1985. Much of the material is undated, and the bulk of what has dates was produced in the late 1970s. Based on subject titles typed onto each microfiche sleeve, a large portion of the material is related to Lansing's participation in the U. S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant program. This program, initiated in 1974 during the administration of President Gerald Ford, attempts to eliminate poverty and urban blight with control largely placed in the hands of state and local authorities. Typical materials in this collection include minutes and agendas for various committees such as Zoning or Parks and Recreation, correspondence, chronological files, interoffice files, and subject files. See the linked spreadsheet (.xlsx format) for a listing of all subjects represented in this collection. To request any of the material, note the item number, name, and box it appears in. Digital copies of microfiche pages are available on request. Acronyms appear frequently throughout the material titles. They are as follows: CACHPA - Capital Area Comprehensive Health Planning Association CD - Citizens District or Community Development CDBG - Community Development Block Grant Program CDC - Citizens District Council/Committee or Community Development Council/Committee CIP - Capital Improvements Program CRP - Community Renewal Program EHAB - Environmental Health Advisory Board (?) HAP - Housing Assistance Plan HIP - Home Improvement Program HUD - Housing and Urban Development MC - Model Cities MSHDA - Michigan State Housing Development Authority OCD - Office of Community Development MCDDA - (Unknown) MDDA - (Unknown) MDSS - Michigan Department of Social Services NDA - Neighborhood Development Area NHS - Neighborhood Housing Service NIP - Neighborhood Improvement Program NSA - Neighborhood Strategy Area PPBS - Planning-Programming-Budgeting Systems SEMCOG - South East Michigan Council of Governments SRI - Systems Research Inc. The 72-acre plot of ground on Jefferson Avenue, owned by the city and partially occupied by its water works pumping station, has been made one of Detroit's beauty spots. The water supply is pumped through a long tunnel from the intake pipe in Lake St. Clair to the distributing point. The park is remarkable for its big floral clock and the memorial at the entrance, in honor of the late Chauncey Hurlbut, for many years one of the city's water commissioners and president of the board.
