"The point system maintained government control over rationing, but at the same time allowed the consumer a reasonable amount of control over her family's diet ... the point values were periodically reevaluated and changed accordingly, for instance in 1943 the OPA [Office of Price Administration] lowered the point value of peaches to encourage increased consumption of that summer's bumper crop of the fruit," from "Food in the USA: a reader," by Carole Counihan.
