- Color map titled "A New Map of Michigan with its Canals, Roads & Distances," published by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co. in 1850. The map shows the state of Michigan with each different colored block representing a different county. The title block and it located on the upper right corner of the map, under which are boxes which list "Steam Boat Routes" and the distance from "Detroit to Fort Howard." The title block also contains the legend, which indicates the symbols used to designate "Capital," "County Towns," "Common Do.," "Railroads," "Do. in progress," and "Do. proposed," and also the scale used to indicate the distances between towns. The inset located on the left side of the map shows the "Western Part of Michigan." The perimeter of the map contains lines of latitude and longitude. The map is surrounded by a decorative green border. Text underneath the border on the lower left corner of the map reads "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1850, by Thomas, Cowperthwait & Co., in the Clerk's office of the District court of the Eastern District of Pennsylvania."
