- Republican. Barry County native and University of Michigan graduate who became lawyer and moved here in 1872. Appointed successively assistant prosecuting attorney for Kent County, Grand Rapids city attorney, and county prosecuting attorney. As mayor he contended with problems of the 1893 Panic. In 1905 was elected Superior Court Judge.

- Portrait of John Ball, circa 1875. John Ball (1794-1884) was an early pioneer and land speculator who came to Grand Rapids in 1836. He was also a teacher, lawyer, and a politician. He also left forty acres of land on the west side to the City of Grand Rapids which became John Ball Park and home of John Ball Zoo.

- Etta Wilson was known as Michigan's first newspaper woman. She was reporter for the Herald, covering topics from society to sports. She later worked for the Detroit Sunday News-Tribune. She was also a lecturer and an ornithologist.
