Lansing Business Men's Association

Description:
These records from the Lansing Business Men's Association document some of the organization's activities in helping to establish Lansing as the home of several strong industries in the early 20th century. Although the records are incomplete and sometimes fragmentary, minutes, memos, and other material point to the group's efforts in purchasing land that was then sold to businessmen such as R. E. Olds, and in the oversight of the paving of Michigan Avenue "macadam road" from the Capitol to M. A. C. (Michigan State University). Lists of factories in the area, three unattributed speeches, and financial records are also included in the collection. Most material is organized in files by year. The Lansing Business Men's Association was in existence from its founding in 1901, through 1911 when it was reconfigured to follow the chamber of commerce model that existed in many cities already. For more information on the LBMA and the history of the Chamber of Commerce, see this link.
